How to Order a Commissioned Portrait

Getting Started

If you've decided you would like a horse portrait, our first step is a simple conversation. Just email me your contact information and any questions at horseyart@yahoo.ca or call me at 519-748-4358.

We will work together to determine if your existing photographs are suitable, or if more will need to be taken.

The Process

Portraits are done from your photos and may be sent to me digitally by email as high resolution jpeg or tif files. Alternately, original photos can be sent through the mail compiled digitally on a CD or as hard copy prints.

Prints should be no smaller than 4"x6" - if they are larger, that is even better. You should indicate which pose you prefer if you send more than one photo - and sending more than one photo is encouraged, if only for additional references such as colour. If the colours vary between the photos please indicate which photo has the more accurate colour representation. All photos and any other materials belonging to you that you provide will be returned with the finished painting.

Prices

Once I have suitable references to work from, I will suggest what I feel is the best way to set up the portrait. Due to the unique factors that go into creating each portrait, prices vary.

I will quote a price to you based on materials, complexity and the size you've requested before any work begins. Usually, the following fees are standard based on a head shot (portrait) with a rendered or plain background.

Prices for a full colour oil painting begin at:   8 x 10 - $300     9 x 12 - $400

Prices do not include shipping and handling or applicable taxes. Paintings are done on canvas with oil paint, varnished and delivered unframed. Paintings usually take 4 to 6 weeks to complete, depending on the complexity of the piece. Orders for paintings to be delivered in time for Christmas must be received no later than October 31.

Copyright

You own your painting, however Susan Schaefer owns the copyright and reserves the right to use photos of your pieces on her printed promotional materials and web applications. Your painting cannot be reproduced in any way without the written agreement of Susan Schaefer.

Each piece is unique and original - one of a kind. All work is signed and dated by the artist. Gift Certificates are also available in any denomination.
